Speakers will share their experiences and insights as they delve into ‘Innovations in Healthcare’ that are occurring across the region.

David Zaas, MD, MBA
President, Duke Raleigh Hospital

Bringing National Innovations to the Local Level: A pulmonary and critical care medicine physician by training, Dr. Zaas formerly served as medical director for Lung Transplantation at Duke. As President of Duke Raleigh, he is advancing innovative clinical integration, access improvement and patient-centered care design in line with national trends AND designed for Duke Raleigh. Dr. Zaas received his undergraduate degree from Yale University, completed his medical degree at Northwestern University and his MBA at Duke.

Dana Weston, MHA, FACHE
President and CEO, UNC Rockingham Hospital

A Journey to the Brink of Closure and Back: Dana Weston was President of Morehead Memorial Hospital, a 108-bed community hospital in Eden, NC, when it filed for bankruptcy in June of 2017. Over a period of 15 months, Ms. Weston guided the hospital through a reorganization process and eventual acquisition by UNC Health Care. She will share insights, strategies, and lessons learned from her experiences leading through uncertainty and change. Ms. Weston received her MHA from UNC–Chapel Hill, and her BS in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University in Atlanta.

Rick Shrum, MBA, MHA
Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, WakeMed Health and Hospitals

Improving Behavioral Health through Community Collaborations: Rick Shrum is WakeMed’s leader for the Network for Advancing Behavioral Health (NABH), a network of community based groups designed to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations, strengthen community ties, minimize disruptive crises and keep the whole person healthy. The network is using a unique combination of technology and collaboration to streamline and accelerate the transition from the hospital to the right outpatient care. Mr. Shrum received both his MBA and MHA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.


This event is pre-approved to award 1.5 hours of ACHE Qualified Education Credit (non-face-to-face) toward advancement or re-certification in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

This program has been approved by the National Association for Healthcare Quality for 1.5 CPHQ continuing education credits.
